Game Server Hosts: Please Do Not Spam the Directory Server with Fake Game Servers

From ioquake3: link to original post

One of the discussions that has come up after our recent move to the mpdirectory server software has been players alerting us to false entries in the server browser for game servers that are duplicates of others or are inflating their player counts without using the built-in bots that actually can provide a gameplay feature.

Server hosts:

We appreciate your contribution of game servers to keep Quake 3 and related games alive, but let me be clear: Inserting false entries into the server directory is a waste of resources for a free software project that has at the moment about $5/month in funding. It wastes our bandwidth and it is futile. Players will immediately realize the deception, leave your game server after joining, and learn that your game servers are not trustworthy.

This is bad for everyone involved.

If you continue this it will make us engage in a cat and mouse game to block your servers and enable users to filter the server list. It is a waste of everyone’s time and resources that could be better spent working on ioquake3.

Please do not spam the directory server with false information.

If you want players to enjoy your game servers, you need to win that trust honestly, without resorting to false player counts and spamming the same servers multiple times into the directory. Please help keep ioquake3 games fun for everyone and do not waste resources. Thank you.
