2021.1.3 Eos Released!

A brand new version of Vircadia has landed with an extensive set of changes for the various components in its ecosystem.

A Tech-oriented Release

This release has been mainly focused on bug fixes and technical feature additions.

  • Update OpenVR (SteamVR) to the latest version 1.16.8.
  • Create App update including the addition of a “Reset Rotation” button.
  • Compilation fixes.
  • Various crash and stability fixes.
  • Much more…

However, it still is not without the inclusion of a shiny feature or two: we merged a major update to the way materials are handled in the native Interface, thereby enabling next generation innovations such as TV screens on avatars.

You can read more about this release here, and you can comment or ask questions in the forum post.

Milestones in Web

We’ve been making strides on our project to add web support to Vircadia’s virtual worlds and wider ecosystem. For example, we’ve recently made the first strides in enabling audio communication in the browser, on the way to giving web users access to communiate with hundreds of people in single instances. However, we won’t be stopping there as we work to enable entity (world content) and avatar support as we enter 2022.

In partnership with the Linux Professional Institute (LPI), we are hard at work to bring open source virtual world technology for implementation by developers and companies to deliver a free and open metaverse to the masses.

Community Spotlight: MakeAvatar

One of Vircadia’s community members, Haptic Monkey, has released the beta for his very own web-based avatar creation tool named “MakeAvatar”. This tool provides a full suite of customization from individual body parts to clothing and outfits.

Thanks to this month’s contributors!

The community and active development group is larger and more diverse than you’d expect!

Alongside programming, there is much time and effort put into continually testing, reviewing, and documenting changes to Vircadia’s many core components.
